We recently received a message from a customer who had purchased several USB drives from us. They were trying to format the drives to NTFS on their Mac, but kept getting this error:
“Could not create NTFS file system! Error: -69832: File system formatter failed”
At first glance, this error might look like a hardware issue—especially when it happens with multiple drives. But after reviewing the screenshot and understanding their setup, we realized the real cause: a compatibility issue between macOS and NTFS formatting.
Here’s what was happening
Mac systems can read NTFS drives by default, but cannot write or format them without special third-party tools.
The customer was using Tuxera Disk Manager, but the error suggested either an outdated driver or a macOS security block.
The system was attempting to format, hitting a permission or driver issue, and stopping mid-process—resulting in the error.
Our solution (simple and effective)
We walked the customer through two quick fixes:
Format the drive to exFAT instead of NTFS – exFAT works seamlessly on both Mac and Windows, supports large files, and requires no third-party tools. It’s the most reliable cross-platform format.
If NTFS was absolutely necessary, we advised formatting the drive on a Windows PC first, then using it on Mac—a straightforward workaround that bypasses macOS limitations entirely.
We also reassured them: the drives themselves were perfectly fine. The issue was software-related, not hardware.
The customer was relieved to know the problem was solvable. They ended the conversation with a follow-up question:
“Can you send them NTFS if I buy new USB?”
We explained that while we can pre-format drives upon request (NTFS, exFAT, FAT32, etc.), the best long-term solution for cross-platform use remains exFAT. They appreciated the guidance and left with confidence—both in their existing drives and in our support.
